Sneakers & Speakers: Bringing it to the Table

Join us on Thursday, June 20th from 5:30- 9:00 p.m. at 鶹ýAV Main Campus: 1400 Oakman Blvd, Detroit MI 48238, for this year’s Sneakers and Speakers! We invite you to an insightful kitchen table conversation with local food activists as we dive deep into the fight for food justice across Detroit. Let’s meet like moderator and panelists below:

Moderator: Winona Bynum

Winona Bynum is the executive director of the Detroit Food Policy Council (DFPC) an education, advocacy and policy organization led by Detroiters committed to creating a sustainable, local food system that promotes food security, food justice and food sovereignty in the city of Detroit. Winona is a registered dietitian/nutritionist (RDN). She serves on the board of directors of Diversify Dietetics; a nonprofit with the mission of increasing the racial and ethnic diversity in the field of nutrition by empowering nutrition leaders of color and is the Chair-Elect of the board of trustees of the Michigan Nutrition and Dietetics Institute (MNDI).

Ederique “Chef E” Goudia

Beyond her ability to create delicious and culturally significant food, chef activist and consultant, Ederique “Chef E” Goudia, is committed to the community, health, and sustainability of our food system. This is evident through her recent work with local non-profits FoodLab Detroit, Detroit Food Academy, and Make Food Not Waste, a non-profit committed to keeping food out of landfills, slowing climate change, and creating lasting solutions to food waste.

Frank Kubik

Frank has been with 鶹ýAV since 1981. He started in the food program warehouse, moved to the finance department in 1983, then returned to the food program in 1987 as assistant manager and became manager in 1990. In October 2011, he was promoted to director. In addition to directing the food program, he is a current board member and four-time president of the National Commodity Supplemental Food Program Association. He also co-chairs the NCSFPA Education Committee and has served as vice president, past president, and local agency director.

Kiki Louya

Kiki is the Executive Director of Detroit Food Academy (DFA) and came to the organization with a wealth of knowledge and over 20 years of experience as a food business leader and non profit executive. She is the former Chef/Owner of Folk & the Farmer’s Hand, two award winning food concepts, where she gained notoriety for her fight for fair wage. She was recognized as one of “16 Black Chefs Changing Food in America” by the New York Times for her pursuit of social justice in the kitchen.

Phil Jones

Chef Phil’s philosophy goes beyond cooking; it’s about telling stories through food that contribute to equity in Black and Brown communities and creating dishes that are nourishing and carry the essence of vibrant, flavorful memories. Currently, as the Community Food Specialist for the Detroit City Council, District Three (since March 2023), and the Food Policy Specialist for the Detroit Food Policy Council (since 2024), Chef Phil has focused on policy development, community engagement, and especially on improving the grocery store landscape in Detroit.
